HypnoBirthing®

The Mongan Method

A complete childbirth education program that combines self-hypnosis, relaxation, breathing, birth education and partner preparation to help you approach birth feeling informed, prepared and confident.

Designed for expectant parents and birth partners preparing together.

What is HypnoBirthing®?

At its heart, HypnoBirthing is about changing our relationship with fear so that the body can relax and do what it is designed to do during birth.

Fear and anxiety can activate the body's stress response, increasing tension and making it more difficult to relax and work with the natural processes of labour.

HypnoBirthing combines childbirth education with breathing, relaxation, self-hypnosis and mental rehearsal. Through practice, parents learn ways to reduce fear, work with their nervous system and approach birth with greater calm and confidence.

It isn't about achieving a particular kind of birth. The techniques can be useful in many birth settings and alongside different medical choices and interventions.

What does the research say?

~50% lower odds of epidural use

among both first-time and subsequent births in the HypnoBirthing group

A 2026 Australian study compared more than 1,300 matched pairs of births. People who used HypnoBirthing during labour had significantly lower odds of epidural use and caesarean birth, and greater use of water immersion during labour.

Because this was an observational study rather than a randomized trial, it can't tell us that HypnoBirthing caused these outcomes. But it adds useful evidence about the potential role of preparation, relaxation and hypnosis-based techniques during childbirth.

For me, the goal of HypnoBirthing isn't to promise a particular kind of birth. It's to give you practical skills to approach whatever unfolds with greater preparation, confidence and flexibility.
